About the Game

Sudoku is the world's most popular logic puzzle: a 9×9 grid, a handful of starting clues, and one rule — every row, column, and 3×3 box holds the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. There is no arithmetic and no luck. Every board is a self-contained deduction with a single correct answer.

Pocket Sudoku brings that pure, meditative challenge to your phone with clean handcrafted boards, forgiving notes and undo, and a daily puzzle that gives you a reason to come back. Whether you have five quiet minutes or a long train ride, there's always another board waiting.

How to Set Up

  1. The Grid: A 9×9 board divided into nine 3×3 boxes.
  2. The Givens: Some cells start filled in. These clues are fixed and define the puzzle.
  3. The Goal Line: Every row, column, and box must end up containing each digit 1–9 exactly once.
  4. Difficulty: Choose Easy, Medium, or Hard — fewer givens means a harder solve.

Objective

Fill every empty cell so that the completed grid satisfies all three constraints at once: no digit repeats within any row, any column, or any 3×3 box. Reach that state using logic alone — each correct placement narrows the possibilities for the cells around it until the whole board resolves.

Rules & Techniques

One Through Nine

Every row, every column, and each 3×3 box must contain the digits 1–9 with no repeats.

Start With the Givens

The pre-filled clues are fixed anchors. Every empty cell is deduced from them — the givens never change.

Scan and Cross-Hatch

Sweep rows and columns through a box to find the one cell where a digit can legally go.

Pencil in Candidates

Use notes to record every digit a cell could still hold, then eliminate them as you place values.

Naked & Hidden Pairs

When two cells in a unit share the same two candidates, those digits are locked out of every other cell in that unit.

No Guessing Required

Each board has a single solution reachable by logic alone — a wrong entry trips the mistake counter, not a dead end.

Difficulty Tiers

ModeWhat to Expect
EasyThe most givens — a relaxed solve built on simple scanning.
MediumFewer clues; expect cross-hatching and naked pairs.
HardMinimal givens that demand advanced logic and patience.
Daily ChallengeOne shared board a day — build a streak and climb the leaderboard.

Tip: The daily board is the same for everyone — solve it to grow your streak.

Solving Strategy

  • Scan First: Before writing anything, look for digits that already appear several times — they're the easiest to place next.
  • Work the Boxes: Focus on one 3×3 box at a time and ask where each missing digit can legally sit.
  • Use Pencil Marks: Fill crowded cells with candidate notes so eliminations become obvious instead of guesswork.
  • Look for Singles: A cell with only one candidate, or a digit with only one home in a unit, can be placed immediately.
  • Chase Pairs and Triples: Locked pairs and triples remove candidates elsewhere and often unlock a chain of easy placements.
  • Keep the Daily Streak: Solve the daily board every day to grow your streak and hold your spot on the leaderboard.
  • Learn From Hints: Stuck? A hint reveals the next logical step — use it to spot the pattern you missed, then keep solving.
